Elephants

Limited edition of 50

I painted this mother and baby elephant as part of a collaboration with Jono Dry: an exploration of scale in the most literal sense. When we began playing with the idea of scale, we both instinctively (and inevitably) gravitated toward elephants. There is perhaps no creature - other than a whale, of course - that embodies the concept more naturally.

While Jono worked expansively and on a massive scale in black and white graphite, I worked as I always do: minutely, and in full (water)colour. The same subject, interpreted in polar opposite ways.

These giants carry a contradiction within them: they are as immense in size as they are gentle in spirit. It will always be surreal to me that we get to walk the Earth alongside them.
