“The Hobbit” by J. R. R. Tolkien.
The Hobbit was published in September 1937 by Allen & Unwin. George Allen is rumoured to have given his ten-year-old son the manuscript and a shilling to write a reader’s report that would help determine whether he should publish it. It turned out to be a brilliant investment.
